Chapter 5

Nicole sighed and looked covertly at her watch as EJ reviewed his notes. She had only been talking about her past for twenty minutes but she had already covered a lot of unpleasant topics, from the abuse by her father to admitting she had mostly married Victor for money and how she had viewed the vow to be faithful to him as more of a suggestion than a promise. And of course Victor was going to blather on that she had tried to kill him. The one and only comforting thought she held onto as she poured out her rather sordid past to a pokerfaced EJ was that he was one of the few people in Salem who had a nastier past than she did, if what Philip said was to be believed, and obviously some of it was. Come to think of it, when she had married Victor it had been nice to think he couldn't judge her, but then he ended up, well, judging her.

She turned her attention back to EJ. Seeing him in the strong sunlight of his office had not diminshed her opinion of his good looks. He was still tall, dark and handsome, as the saying went, and was well dressed in a charcoal suit and striped gray and blue shirt, though she wasn't crazy about his tie--she wouldn't have picked that shade of blue. Did Sami pick out his ties, she wondered, absently.

EJ finally looked up. "So, when is this meeting again with Victor and his lawyers?"

"Friday, at 2:00." Victor had left a curt note to this effect at the breakfast table.

EJ made a notation in his calendar. "At the Kirakis home or where?"

"No, at their law offices. Oh, and EJ, I need to tell you something before I forget. Philip probably told Victor to have us followed."

"Followed? As in surveillance? I assumed Victor's been having you watched since you got back to town. I hope you haven't done anything stupid." EJ looked at her sharply. "You haven't, have you?"

"No," Nicole said, defensively. "I've been living in Victor's house, he'd know if I had a man in my life."

EJ looked unconvinced. "Victor travels a lot. Besides which, you're not in the house 24/7. And when you are in the house, you're not alone even then." His expression suddenly turned cold. "You're not sleeping with Philip Kiriakis, are you?"

Nicole gasped, genuinely surprised though really, she shouldn't have been. "How dare you ask me that?"

EJ laughed thinly. "Doesn't feel so good, does it, Nicole? To have a question you don't like come out of the blue? Now, answer me, like I answered you earlier, and tell me the truth. I mean, come on. I very seriously doubt he thinks of you as some sort of off-limits stepmother. You're not that much older than he is and you're gorgeous. Is anything going on between the two of you?"

Well, it was always gratifying to hear a handsome man call her gorgeous, even if that man did have the bad taste to be in love with Sami Brady. Or, at least to marry her for some reason. Too bad that was a big, weird red flag. Nicole looked at him levelly and answered,

"No, I'm not having an affair with Philip. Relieved, counselor?"

EJ smiled; he did look relieved. "Yes, of course. I mean, Victor would certainly think the value of your case was down to zero if you were sleeping with his son. That's why I'm glad to hear it." Nicole found herself hoping, with some support based on his expression, that wasn't the only reason he was relieved. "But why do you think they would be following me?"

"Well, Philip said . . . implied . . . no, he outright said, that I would try to get you to lower your fees by sleeping with you so that's why they would want to watch us. I know . . . stupid, right? I mean, you're a married man and all."

EJ said nothing for a moment, just looked at her and drummed his fingers on the desktop, until she regretted saying anything at all. Should she say something? No, let him break the silence. The very uncomfortable silence.

Finally, he did. "Was that your plan, Nicole? Be honest."

Nicole had to admit to herself that although she barely knew this man, she felt like she could be honest with him about anything. Maybe because he obviously had a bad history himself. Maybe because even if she wanted it, she couldn't have a romantic relationship with him so there was no need to construct any facade. It didn't matter if he liked her or not, as long as he got her her money. She could see herself reminding herself that a lot in the future, and wishing things could be different. But they weren't, and Nicole wasn't a "what if" kind of a person. A waste of time.

"Nicole?"

She shook herself. "Okay. Yes, the thought crossed my mind. But, now that you're on to me I guess I have to forget about it. Just another reason to try to settle this case quickly, right?" She laughed, but her laugh sounded a little tinny to her.

EJ smiled at her, clearly not at all disturbed by her admission. "I'm very flattered. Of course, lawyers should never sleep with their clients, particularly not married lawyers. I'm not interested in giving Samantha a reason to be sitting in Mr. Pesterall's office and taking custody of our child and half my money. Even if . . . ." he trailed off, but from the expression on his face Nicole realized he was never going to finish that sentence, no matter how interested she was to hear it.

She reached for her handbag. "So, do you need anything else from me? Anything else embarassing we need to cover? Or shall I just meet you Friday afternoon?"

EJ stood and walked her to the door. "Yes, meet me there a few minutes early. Remember to let me handle negotiations; try not to say anything unless I ask you to, all right? I'll see you then, but in the meantime if anything comes up you can give me a call."

"Yes, of course. I'll see you then," Nicole said, shaking his proffered hand. What a waste that he was going home to that shrew, who couldn't possibly love him. As she wandered down the hall back to the foyer, Nicole wished, not for the first time, she had a female friend to talk to about these things. But she had nobody to go get a drink with, and if she went to go get one by herself, well, Victor would just love that. She had to stay out of trouble, get her hands on some of Victor's money, and then maybe she would find a way not to be lonely.

Chapter 6

EJ was not particularly pleased when he got home that evening to find that, not only was John Black home, but Marlena Evans was there with him. While Marlena's manners towards him technically could not be faulted, she was cool and stand-offish with him, clearly not regarding him as a true son-in-law, but rather a temporary nuisance. At the moment, she was sitting next to John on the sofa, talking to him and clutching a handful of photographs and what looked like letters as well. John was listening respectfully, but with a somewhat frustrated expression as well.

John was the first to notice him, and Marlena turned to see what he was looking at. Her face immediately smoothed into a cool mask, matching her professional appearance: dark wool pantsuit, cream silk blouse, not a hair out of place. Sometimes it was hard to believe Samantha was Marlena's daughter; they were so very different, and the way they dressed was but one of those areas.

EJ said, "Excuse me for interrupting. I didn't realize you were here, Marlena."

"I came by to see my family." Was it his imagination, or had she emphasized my? "However, since I've already seen Sami and my grandchildren, it's time for me to go."

John jumped up. "You're going to go, Blondie? I wish you wouldn't. I still can't remember, but I like hearing you tell me about our past. We were a pretty exciting couple, weren't we?"

EJ could practically feel the "go away!" waves emanating from Marlena, but just as he was about to gracefully withdraw and before she could say anything, John went on, "Let me take you to dinner, please. I want to keep talking about these pictures, maybe it will help. What do you say?"

Marlena looked very pleased, but merely said quietly, "I'm glad to hear you want to keep trying. I'd love to go to dinner."

John smiled, and for a moment there was something about his face that suggested the "old" John Black. He took Marlena's arm and escorted her out of the room, ignoring EJ as he left. Marlena did give him a cold nod, which was probably about as much as he could expect from her.

As he poured himself a drink, Samantha came in. Involuntarily, his thoughts went back to comparing her style of dress to her mother's, as she was sloppily dressed in a T-shirt and yoga pants. He reminded himself she was taking care of twin babies, one of whom was his child, and she would look ridiculous in Marlena's pantsuit and heels. And of course he could hardly expect her to look as glamorous as Nicole had . . . never mind. He didn't like to admit even to himself how many times he had thought about Nicole in her red dress from the night before, her wavy hair loose. He would not be another in her list of fools. Besides, he was happy, he finally had what he wanted and it was everything he and Father had dreamed . . . right?

"Johnny's already down for the night," Samantha said, in lieu of a greeting. "The twins were rambunctious today so I'm glad they're asleep already."

EJ nodded. "I'm sorry they were trying. I know how hard it is for you to take care of them."

"They're my children, EJ, they're not a problem," Samantha said, and he could tell it was going to be one of those very frequent days where nothing he said would be right. She was probably still mad about Nicole, actually; better to find out.

"Are you still upset that Nicole Kiriakis is my client?"

Samantha snorted. "Of course I'm still upset about that. She and I have hated each other for years. It still makes me sick to think of how my brother's love was wasted on her, and how Lucas was such a fool as to think she loved him . . . well, she just uses men and spits them out and I don't like how she's done that to men I care about."

EJ thought her remark about Nicole using men was quite revealing. Although Samantha was not terribly forthcoming about her own past, he knew from his background checking and from what he had observed since knowing her that she was insecure about men, with reason. She had done a lot of chasing but had not often been chased back, not with the same enthusiasm or for the same reasons. Nicole's effortless appeal to men was obviously galling to her.

He tried the soft approach. "She's simply my client, Samantha. She isn't going to use me."

"Oh, she'll try," Samantha snapped. "I bet she shows up naked under a trenchcoat for your next meeting."

"What do you care anyway, Samantha? If she wants to sleep with me, why shouldn't I take advantage? Are you jealous? Are you wanting more from this marriage?"

Samantha looked taken aback. He himself had spit out those words without really thinking them through. He was still trying to behave himself and he had initially had no intention of taking advantage of Nicole's apparent attraction to him, though now that the words were out there they seemed to make perfect sense. Nicole was beautiful, charming and sexy; furthermore, she very likely harbored no delusions about sex and what it might or might not mean. He didn't share a bed with Samantha anyway so it wouldn't even be cheating, really. If he was being totally honest with himself, and he might as well be, the idea that Nicole was his client was more likely to stop him than that he was "married."

After a moment of silence, Samantha said coldly, "No, of course not. We're still married in name only and that isn't going to change. I don't care what you do. If you're stupid enough to get involved with Nicole, you deserve what you get, every bit of it. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to finish writing a letter to Lucas." With that last, which she apparently thought was a parting shot, she huffed out of the room.

EJ threw himself down in one of the wing chairs, realizing he was hungry. The housekeeper was gone for the day, but the night maid brought him a dinner tray. He idly flipped through the file materials Nicole had brought him as he ate. She still had some documents and photographs from before, when Victor had thought the divorce was going through, and they were revealing. He had learned over time that Samantha was not really the bad girl he thought she was; her dreams were actually incredibly banal, and all she had ever wanted was romantic love and a family. Nothing wrong with those dreams, but they were not what he had initially thought were percolating in that head. Nicole, however, was a totally different sort: she obviously did like money and power and was willing to go far to get them. For someone like her, making a wife jealous was child's play. Maybe they could work out a deal that benefited everyone.

Hmm..I wonder if we can have some John and Nicole bonding? I liked their semi-friendship on DAYS.
I kind of feel bad that EJ doesnt have someone to talk stuff through..maybe John?
Thanks for the chapter!

I know, everyone in Salem is so friendless, right? Well, that's the nice thing about fic, you can write what you want.

Chapter 7

Nicole parked in the carefully-raked semi-circle in front of the Kiriakis home. She had spent a productive afternoon at Barron's, thinking of all the things Victor's money would buy and mentally marking out those items she could come back and get, assuming fashions didn't change before they settled. She had tried on Chanels and Armanis, Laboutins and Jimmy Choos, careless of the exasperation of the saleswomen who realized too late no sales were forthcoming. She had wandered through the lingerie department, thinking perhaps she should update that area as well, in case EJ changed his mind about staying faithful to Samanther, but ended up deciding to wait at least until she had a better idea of when she could expect to settle with Victor.

Entering the front hall, she found an unexpected visitor: Chloe Lane. Chloe was sitting in one of the hall chairs, and when she saw Nicole, rolled her eyes. Nicole was in too good a mood from what she hoped was the forward movement of her life to be really offended though, and decided to just needle Chloe a little bit.

"Chloe! Good to see you. Are you applying for the upstairs maid position? I heard Brady didn't leave you, well, too well off."

"No, Henderson told me you were the frontrunner for that job, so I didn't bother," Chloe said, sweetly. "Though I do plan to support myself instead of relying on my ex-husband to finance me when we're not together anymore."

Nicole shrugged. "You and your silly little principles . . . glad I don't have 'em. Victor made me miserable so he can pay for that pleasure, thank you very much. Maybe if I had been married to Brady I wouldn't feel like that, but I wasn't so I do."

"Well, I didn't marry for money, I married a man who loved me," said Chloe, with a faint emphasis on "me" to remind Nicole who Brady had chosen.

"And look how that turned out," Nicole said, brightly. "You're divorced and broke. . . doesn't say much for marrying for love, now does it? Why are you here, anyway?"

"None of your . . . " Chloe started, but just then Philip came in, his expression instantly changing from pleased to wary as he saw Nicole. He moved over to Chloe's side protectively and put his hand on her shoulder.

"Oh, come on, Philip," Nicole said. "You really think you have to protect Chloe from me? What am I going to do to her? We were just catching up."

"Nicole, I would think you would be willing to admit you have a way of getting under people's skins, and furthermore you don't care. I mean, you're living here even though you're totally unwelcome. Why shouldn't I assume you were being your usual annoying self with Chloe?"

"Sor-ry," said Nicole. "I didn't realize Chloe was such a delicate flower. Never mind, I'll just go on to dinner . . . it is dinnertime, isn't it?" she asked, glancing at her watch.

Chloe looked reproachfully at Philip. "You didn't tell me Nicole would be here for dinner."

"That's because I hoped she wouldn't be," he said, glaring at Nicole, "but obviously she's trying to play the good wife until the divorce goes through. I'm sure she'd rather be out suckering some guy into buying dinner for her." Turning back to Chloe, he said, "why don't we two go out to dinner? Wherever you like."

Chloe smiled at him gratefully. "I'd like that. I'm ready when you are."

Nicole said, "Why does everybody think it's impossible to hurt my feelings?"

"Because you always start crap, Nicole, that's why," Chloe snapped. "You're rude to everyone else so don't expect people to be nice to you." She and Philip left, the door slamming firmly behind them, leaving Nicole thinking that Chloe probably did have a point. Oh well.

Unluckily for her, Victor was at the dinner table; she had hoped he was not home. He looked up as she entered and sighed audibly.

"Honey, I'm home," she said, cheerily, waving at Henderson to bring her a plate.

"I couldn't be more delighted," he said, sarcastically. "I assume you aren't going to ask me for any more extensions of time or anything, because you won't get them."

"Oh, no, EJ and I will be at the meeting on Friday, right on time," she said, pouring herself a glass of wine, not wanting to wait for Henderson.

"EJ? EJ DiMera? What happened to the other guys?"

"Quaking in your boots, huh? Didn't think I'd get a DiMera on my side. They're the one family in town who couldn't care less about being on the Kiriakis good side and doesn't need you at all."

Victor frowned, but what he said next surprised her. "Nicole, you know I can't wait to get rid of you. I want you out of my life as soon as possible. You've brought me nothing but misery in the grand scheme of things. And yet, as rotten as you can be, I still think EJ is worse. God help me, but if you're hooked up with him I might actually worry about you for a second or two."

"Victor, I think I can say without fear of being contradicted that is the nicest thing you've said to me in years. What's so wrong with EJ?" I mean, she thought, besides shooting, kidney-stealing, raping, torturing . . . .

"He's a chip off the old block. I don't think he has any more conscience than Stefano does."

Nicole couldn't resist snorting. "And yet you, of course, are pure as the driven snow. You do know I've met you before, right?"

Victor shrugged, his face indifferent again. "Stefano and EJ are in a whole different category. But suit yourself."

"I will, thanks," Nicole said, defiantly, and they finished their meal in silence, Nicole wondering again whether she had messed up. Well, if EJ wasn't any good as a lawyer she could always hire someone else, no harm done. Hopefully, anyway. The main thing was not to get personally involved with him, even if he wanted that, until she had a better grasp of whether he really was as bad as everyone said and if that was something she couldn't handle. After all, she had been, still was in fact, Mrs. Victor Kiriakis--was EJ really worse than Victor? Her mind drifted back to how he looked, and how even if he was worse than Victor, his looks and charm would certainly make up for a lot . . . right? Or, maybe she was just being stupid. Maybe that connection she had felt between she and EJ was only her imagination.
