A Vision of the Future

By Chrystal Madison

Disclaimer: I don’t own EJ and Nicole, I’m just borrowing them for a while.

EJ paused on the stairs, hearing soft sobbing coming from just upstairs in the smaller bedroom that was slowly being transformed into a nursery. He had become rather used to his fiance’s often sudden and unprovoked moodswings, but something told him this was different. His heart was aching with whatever deep emotional pain he could sense was coming from her, and so he pushed the door open.

The nursery was still unfinished; one wall was newly painted in a soft blue and the floors were still bare as the plush carpeting wouldn’t arrive until tomorrow. He found her in the white antique rocking chair, gently cradling the baby’s white teddy bear even as the tears stained her beautiful face. Every so often she would stop rocking and place a hand over her softly rounded, five months pregnant stomach and new tears would fall and a sob would escape from her quivering lips. EJ immediately rushed to her side, sensing that this was definitely not just another crying spell brought on by hormones; she was truly hurting. He gently placed a hand on hers, stroking softly as he knelt down beside her. Her eyes were still red from crying, but she was still beautiful to him.

“EJ,” she sighed, allowing him to help her slide from the chair down to settle comfortably in his lap. She had found that ever since he’d first taken her in his arms like this, her back pressed against his warm chest, his hand stroking her hair, the other hand lacing fingers with hers as he kissed the top of her head, it was the one thing that could always calm her down. She felt safe, loved, cherished. Like he’d protect her from the evils of her past and the uncertainties in her future. She’d never have imagined that she’d ever have found this with him, or any man for that matter. After a few minutes of him simply holding her, he finally spoke.

“What’s wrong, Trouble?” he asked, using his own term of endearment for her.

“I…it’s nothing. It’s just hormones,” she said.

EJ pressed a kiss to her temple, still stroking her hair. “You can’t fool me, sweetheart. You were sobbing in here and it looked a lot more than those unprovoked tears you seem to shed during those happy little commercials on the telly. You know you can tell me anything and I can feel how much you’re hurting right now.”

Nicole drew in a shuddering breath. “I can’t. You’ll hate me.” Another tear slid down her cheek and EJ caught it with his thumb, gently wiping it away. “I could never hate you,” he said.

She sighed. “You will. You’ll hate me when I prove what everyone’s been saying about me.”

EJ frowned. It was true that a lot of the good people of Salem had branded Nicole an outcast, but they had done so to him too after the truth of Johnny Horton’s paternity had been revealed. Once EJ had been praised and in a way, accepted, having changed for the little boy he’d believed to be his son. But after Samantha and Lucas learned the truth, they had shut him out completely, as had the rest of the Bradys and Hortons. Oh sure, he still had his job at Mickey Horton’s firm, but he suspected it was only due to the fact that Mickey hadn’t yet found a legal reason to sack him. But while EJ had accepted he was the only one to blame for his exhile, he couldn’t accept the dark view they had of Nicole. As far as he was concerned, Nicole had done nothing wrong other than fight to survive all her life. He didn’t know everything about her past; it was difficult trying to get her to open up about her childhood, but he knew enough. He knew that whatever skeletons were in her closet were there not by her own actions, but by the actions of others who had been close to her.

“And what could the good people of Salem possibly say about you that would make me hate you?” he asked, smiling reassuringly.

Nicole didn’t smile back. Her eyes lowered, her gaze fixed on her growing belly. “I shouldn’t be having this baby,” she whispered.

“What?” he said. Not believing what she was saying.

“I’ll be a terrible mother,” she said bitterly. “I’ll mess the kid up and he’ll hate me and then you’ll hate me too. Everyone knows it’s true. I was told I wouldn’t be able to have kids before and I knew it was because I wasn’t meant too.” She rubbed her stomach. “This baby….as wonderful and a miracle as it is….” She sighed. “I just don’t think I deserve it.”

EJ shifted her in his arms so that their gazes met. “Stop it, Nicole. You’re going to be a wonderful mother.”

“Oh really? Didn’t Lucas tell you what a great stepmother I was to Will?”

“No, and I really don’t give a damn what he or anyone else says about you.”

“You will when our daughter grows up to be an alcoholic stripper/porn star.”

“Somehow I don’t see our son letting strangers stick dollar bills in his G-string,” EJ teased. It worked, Nicole laughed.

“Yeah, well, I’ll still mess the kid up somehow,” she said.

“Stop it. I know for a fact that you will not mess our child up. You’re the most caring, nurturing woman I know and I couldn’t ask for a better mother to my child.”

“How would you know? It’s not like I’ve had any practice.”

“Oh no?” EJ challenged. “What about Pookie?”

“Pookie?” she asked, confused.

“Yes, Pookie. I’ve seen how much you love that little dog. I held you when you cried over her when she was sick, and I saw the love and pride in your eyes when you showed me all your pictures of her. If you can be that protective and nurturing toward her, I can only imagine how protective you’ll be of our child.”

“I just can’t picture it. I keep seeing myself not knowing what to do and our baby crying all the time because it knows I don’t know how to take care of it. And I see you getting impatient with me and telling me that Samantha would know what to do and then you’ll take our baby away because I’m not capable of being a good mother to it.”

EJ kissed the top of her head again. “Then my dear, you need new glasses because that’s not at all what I see in our future.”

“Well then, what do you see?” she asked.

He gently placed his hand over her stomach and felt a soft kick. Smiling, he softly rubbed the spot and shifted again to have Nicole snuggle in closer. “I see you, right here in this nursery. Our child is tucked safely in your arms, and you’re rocking him to sleep in that chair. We’re both singing him a lullaby and he’s smiling up at us…”

“I don’t sing,” she interrupted.

EJ turned and pressed a kiss to her forehead. “For our child, you love to sing. You sing him to sleep every night because he loves the sound of your voice as much as his daddy does. Now, after he’s fallen asleep, you get up and gently put him in his crib. You pull the blanket up and tuck him in tight so that he’s nice and warm, and you brush the soft hair away from his tiny face to see a soft smile on his face. Then, I place a hand on your waist and after watching him a few more minutes we retire to our bedroom. Now, my dear, it’s a few years later. Our boy is walking now, and we’re at the park both holding his hands. He’s laughing happily as on the count of three we both swing him in the air and he keeps asking for more. Finally we let him go run ahead because he wants to play in the sand with the other kids. We’re not far behind though, just a few steps away, and another set of parents comments to us on how well we’ve raised our boy. Now it’s time for his first day of school and you’ve packed all his favorite snacks. You hold his hand tight as you lead him to his classroom and when the teacher comes to get him, he gives us both a big hug before running off to join his friends. We help him with his homework, he introduces us to his friends, and all the other parents are happy to have their children stay over for sleepovers and have him stay over with them. He gets bigger, starts highschool, and while we often have to deal with his teenage moodswings, we still have a good relationship with him. You get a little anxious when I teach him to drive and buy him his first car, but he arrives home safely and calls to let us know if he’ll be late coming home. And then, you’re helping him pick out a corsage for his date. I’m helping him with his tux. You snap millions of pictures of him with his date and I can see a tear of happiness in your eyes because our son has grown up to be a very handsome and respectable young man. He graduates and there’s no prouder parents at the ceremony than you and I. After that, we have other proud moments. Our son finishes college, he gets married, and the day comes when we’re holding our first grandchild and I’m reminded of the day when we first held our own child in the hospital.” EJ gently cupped her face and brought his lips to hers. “So you see, darling, you are going to be a wonderful mother.”

Nicole gasped as she felt a hard kick from inside her womb. “I think he heard you, Counselor.” She smiled.

EJ stroked her stomach lovingly. “He’s saying that his daddy is right.”

How beautiful! It reminded me of the great scene on the show the other day when EJ told Nicole what kind of date he'd take her on.
